Description:  17th Street. Here is an original photo that I took in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 25 April 1964. At the right (L to R) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #5877 and #5876. Both are EP-20's built by GM-EMD in April of 1949 and rated at 2,000 horsepower each. They've just come down the eastern slope of the Allegheny Mountains with a nine-car passenger train, and are about to stop at the Altoona Station before proceeding on to Lewistown and points East. At the left (L to R) are PRR engines #8608 and #8607. Both are APS-24MS's built by the American Locomotive Company in December of 1955 and rated at 2,400 horsepower each. They're returning to Altoona after making a helper/pusher run up the Mountains to Gallitzin and back. Photo taken adjacent to ALTO Tower.

Description:  Byerly. Here is a duplicate 35mm color slide via Fred Byerly that was taken in Altoona, Pennsylvania, c. 1964. The photographer is not identified. Shown here is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #8607, an APS-24MS built by the American Locomotive Company in December of 1955 and rated at 2,400 horsepower. Partially visible in the middle distance is a trio of ALCn AS-18AM engines, awaiting their next pusher run up "The Mountain" to Gallitzin and back. Beyond them is the marshaling yard for the PRR's Erecting & Machine Shop that's stocked with FM's, "GEEP's," freight and passenger "Sharks," even a GE 44-tonner or two! Photo taken from Juniata's 8th Street Bridge. This photo comes from a color slide set entitled "Diesels On The Pennsylvania" that's produced and distributed by Blackhawk Films of Davenport, Iowa (819-37).

Description:  Winter. Here is an original photo that I took in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 3 January 1965. Prominent here (L to R) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #8607 and #8609. Both are APS-24MS's built by the American Locomotive Company and rated at 2,400 horsepower each; #8607 was built in December of 1955 while #8609 was built in January of 1956. They're serving as tail end helpers on a 57-car mixed-cargo freight train heading up the Allegheny Mountains to Gallitzin, where they'll be uncoupled and returned to East Altoona for further assignment. Notable here is N-5C cabin car #477970. That's the 7th Street Bridge in the background.

Both are APS-24MS's built by the American Locomotive Company and rated at 2,400 horsepower each; #8607 was built in December of 1955 while #8610 was built in January of 1956. They're coming down the eastern slope of the Allegheny Mountains with a 51-car merchandise freight train and will soon pass under 24th Street Bridge on their way through Altoona non-stop to Enola. The cabin car is N-8 #478101.

Description:  Volkmer. Here is an image of a photo by William D. Volkmer that was taken in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 25 June 1958. Shown near the Passenger Station is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #8608, an APS-24MS built by the American Locomotive Company in December of 1955 and rated at 2,400 horsepower. It's moving so as to couple onto a westbound passenger train that's barely visible at the left. Sandwiched in between (R to L) is PRR engine #8667 and two more units whose road numbers are not recorded. All are AS-18AM's built by ALCo and rated at 1,800 horsepower each. #8667 was consructed in February of 1958. Several of the PRR's 12th Street Car Shop buildings dominate the background. William E. Prominent here (R to L) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #8614, #8609, #9866, #9852-B, #9641-B, and #9860. #8614 and #8609 were built by the American Locomotive Company in 1956 and rated at 2,400 horsepower each. #8614 is an AS-24M, but #8609 is an APS-24MS; they are serving as front-end helpers in this context. #9866, #9852-B, #9641-B, and #9860 were built by GM-EMD and rated at 1,500 horsepower each. #9866 is an EFP-15 built in August of 1952. #9852-B is an EFP-15 built in June of 1952 and retired in October of 1967. #9641-B is an EF-15A built in March of 1950. And #9860 is an EFP-15 built in July of 1952. They're threading the interlocking at 14th Street with a 95-car iron-ore train on their way to the Hollidaysburg Branch turnout, after which they'll follow the New Portage Branch line up the Allegheny Mountains ~ via the Muleshoe Curve ~ to Gallitzin and the steel mills of Pittsburgh. Also visible (L to R) are the Altoona Passenger Station, the 12th Street Footbridge, a westbound passenger train about to depart, an eastbound passenger train in the process of departing, and several of the PRR's 12th Street Car Shop buildings.
