Title:
DMIR 2-8-8-4 #220 - Duluth, Missabe & Iron Range
Description:
This massive marvel of steam power was built by Baldwin in 1941 and met every hurdle in handling long pulls with ease. Powerful yet a hungry, this engine could devour coal and water quickly. The Lake Superior Railroad Museum site -- http://www.lsrm.org/Museum/mallet.htm gives some interesting consumption numbers: " When working at full power, [the locomotive] could consume some 10 to 12 tons of coal an hour and evaporate water into steam at the astounding rate of 12,000 gallons per hour. The amount of coal ...used in one hour would be enough to heat a home for two winters." (and Minnesota winters at that, one supposes.) Specs - M-3 class Yellowstone type, 63" drivers, impressive 240 psi boiler pressure, 26x32" cylinders, engine weight of 695,040 lb, impressive tractive effort of 140,093 lb. Unknown photographer and the date is approximate.

Description:
One of the rarest switchers is this Duluth, Missabe and Iron Range Rwy built by Baldwin in December of 1927 as Duluth, Missabe & Northern #93 (serial #60294, class S6). The DMN #93 slid over to the DMIR roster in 1938 and 20 years later, this rare 0-10-0 switcher was scrapped. Unfortunately, the RRPA database doesn't even list a wheel configuration of 0-10-0 anywhere so no config or builder was selected. Specs - 57" drivers, impressive 245 psi boiler pressure, 28x30" cylinders, engine weight of 352,250 lb, impressive tractive effort of 77,600 lb, fitted with Franklin tender booster. Description:

It appears that it might be sitting in the storage/scrap line now at the Proctor yards along with a few of its sister units. The loco could drag 115 ore cars from ore docks on Lake Superior to the Two Harbos, MN ore docks. Sadly after only 19 years of heavy duty service, the loco was sold for scrap in 1962. Specs - 63" drivers, impressive 240 psi boiler pressure, 26x32" cylinders, massive engine wt of 699,700 lb and massive tractive force of 140,000 lb. The photographer was Burdell L. Bulgrin.

Description:
Here is another view of Duluth, Missabe & Iron Range 2-8-8-4 #232 but this time it appears to be sitting in a dead/scrap line at Proctor, MN. Built by Baldwin in January of 1943 (serial #64711), it was an ideal power source for extremely long drags of ore cars heading from the ore docks on Lake Superior to the Two Harbors, MN, ore docks. Unfortunately, the loco was retired and scrapped insold for scrap in 1962 - most have been a preety penny of a sale as large as it was!
