Here is a duplicate 35mm color slide of a photo by Fred R. Kern that was taken near Newport, Pennsylvania, on 24 July 1955. Shown here (R to L) is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #5764 and another unit whose road number is not recorded. Both are EP-22's built by GM-EMD and rated at 2,250 horsepower each. #5764 was constructed in November of 1952. They've just passed VIEW Tower with a passenger train bound for Harrisburg and points East. Note the string of empty 50-ton hopper cars belonging to the Berwind-White Coal Mining Company heading back to the bituminous coal mines of Western Pennsylvania. ("Tchowee"; #19 of 27) |
