Here is a duplicate 35mm color slide of a photo by Fred R. Kern that was taken in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 2 July 1955. Shown here (L to R) is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #9528 and two more units whose road numbers are not recorded. All were built by GM-EMD and rated at 1,500 horsepower each. #9528 is an EF-15 constructed in July of 1948 and retired in July of 1965 after just 17 years of service. Here, this A-B-A set has just passed under the 24th Street Bridge pulling a merchandise freight train up the Allegheny Mountains to Gallitzin and points West. A portion of SLOPE Tower is visible beyond the Bridge. ("Tchowee"; #17 of 40) |
