| Description: |
Alco-Schenectady built this mighty 4-8-4 Northern type steam locomotive in December of 1944 as Union Pacific #844 (serial #72791, FEF-3 class). The locomotive operated in revenue service until 1959. It was stored while awaiting scrapping, along with the rest of the UP steam locomotive fleet. In 1960, railroad leaders recognized the benefits of having a steam program and retained No. 844 for special activities, the kernel of what has become the Union Pacific's heritage fleet. It was later renumbered to UP #8444 in May of 1962 and was used on steam excursions throughout the US. Today, it is one of UP's oldest serving locomotives and the only steam locomotive never retired by a North American Class I railroad. Specs - massive 80" drivers, impressive 300 psi boiler pressure, 25x32" cylinders, engine wt of 486,340 lb and tractive force of 63,800 lb. This is a photo taken by rail fan Evans and is now in my rr collection. |

Union Pacific 4-8-4 Northern #8444 is one of the crown jewels in Union Pacific's heritage fleet. The loco has run hundreds of thousands of miles as Union Pacific's publicity locomotive. Prime examples are - the locomotive often pulled the annual Denver Post-sponsored Cheyenne Frontier Days train that ran round-trip from Cheyenne to Denver every July before it was discontinued in early 2019; it appeared at Expo '74 in Spokane, Washington; the 1978 dedication of the Utah State Railroad Museum in Ogden, Utah; the 1984 World's Fair in New Orleans; and the 50th anniversary celebration of Los Angeles Union Passenger Terminal in 1989, when it performed a side-by-side run with Southern Pacific 4449; on February 14, 1975, it pulled Amtrak's San Francisco Zephyr from Denver, Colorado to Cheyenne, Wyoming with a pair of EMD SDP40Fs; in 1981, it traveled to the opening of the California State Railroad Museum in Sacramento, along with Union Pacific 3985, which had recently been restored to operational condition. As we were leaving, the southbound it was meeting came through, so we chased the northbound up to Decatur, catching it at Fleyd Moore Rd with its Mexican leader. |

The home signal at CP North Siloam Springs displays approach, a really unusual signal for this location. There had not been a train for over an hour, so its not like the impending 181 was on another trains blocis. The only thing I can figure is the next signal, 226-4, was red, due to a train in the plant at CP Flint Creek, just south of Gentry, going into the SWEPCO plant. |

There was a non controlled siding here up til about a year ago, on the west side of the main. The 262 seen here has pulled a drawbar, and now needs to set out the offending car. I think they managed to get it in the team track, if there was room with all the MOW equipment stashed in it. Having that now removed siding-the tie pile is whats left-would have been a real help. It will be well after dark before the situation is resolved. |

I had heard the northbound approaching from Watts, and went up to shoot it as it came through town. It was pulling into the siding to meet the 262, when that train went into emergency. I got this shot from Tahelquah St, the oil train having one of the new CPKC units. I have yet to see one of these in good light, though Im going to bet, a year from now, Ill be sick of them. |
