SRS Doodlebug #123 - Sperry Rail Service |
| Description: |
Sperry Rail Service (SRS) car #123 was a self-propelled railcar, commonly nicknamed a "doodlebug," used for detecting internal flaws in railroad tracks. It began its life as B&O 6066 built in 11/1926, rebuilt to LV 14 and finally picked up by Sperry which renumbered it to SRS 123 in February of 1936 and rebuilt by Sperry into a non-destructive testing vehicle. No date, location or photographer was listed for the photo so approximates were used. The photo is now in my rr collection. |

| Description: |
SRS Doodlebug #137 is a St Louis Car/EMC gas-electric railcar built in 1925 as SOO M-1 doodlebug (serial #1360C117) and then to Soo X1450 welding car in October of 1942. It was purchased for Sperry Rail and used for track testing Later it was service on the Remington Arms and Black River & Western lines. In 2024, tt was acquired by the Nevada Nothern Ry where it was rebuiilt and restored to run again with a Chevy 396 V8 engine. It now showcases early self-propelled rail technology. No photographer was listed for the photo which is now in my rr collection. |

Sperry Rail Service (SRS) Doodlebug #125 has a rich history as a gas-electric railcar, originally built by St. Louis Car Company in November 1925 for the Lehigh Valley Railroad (LV) as LV #26, used for light passenger service, then repurposed for MOW (Maintenance of Way) and track inspection before becoming SRS #125, serving decades for Sperry testing and even a stint in Europe before being retired, showcasing the evolution from passenger doodlebugs to specialized inspection vehicles. No photographer was listed for the photo which is now in my rr collection. |

TP 4-8-2 #905 - Texas & Pacific |
| Description: |
This massive 4-8-2 Mountain type steam locomotive was built by Baldwin in July of 1928 as Texas & Pacific #905 (serial #60551, class M-2). After a solid service record of nearly 24 years, the loco was retired in July of 1952 and presumedly scrapped. Specs - 73" drivers, impressive 225 psi boiler pressure, 27x30" cylinders, engine wt of 361,400 lb and tractive force of 57,300 lb with a booser adding an additional 10,450 lb of tractive force. This photo was taken by rail fan C. C. Grayson and is now in my rr collection. |

Altoona Action. Here is a duplicate 35mm color slide via Al Chione that was taken in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 4 April 1965. The photographer is not identified. Shown here (R to L) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #6305 and #6306. Both are AF-27's built by the American Locomotive Company in March of 1965 and rated at 2,700 horsepower each. In this context, they're being returned to East Altoona following a helper/pusher run up the Allegheny Mountains to Gallitzin and back. |
