Rubbermaid
Title:  Rubbermaid
Description:  For many years, Rubbermaid had a plant in Cortland. They received plastic pellets vi` rail, though most if not all of their outbound traffic went by truck. BH 1 is working a cut of covered hoppers into the plant on a cold day in December. Despite the gloomy weather, the engine looks festive. That's the ex DLW passenger station at right.

Past the LV connection
Title:  Past the LV connection
Description:  Years ago, the DLW, and later the EL, crossed the Lehigh Valley branch from Freeville up toward Truxton here in Cortland. The line was abandoned at Conrail startup, though there was a short segment with a lumber yard still served by rail. The NYSW still went there at this time. I am standing on the connecting track to the LV as we watch BH 1 go south. How about that MP box with the eagle and buzz saw herald??

BH 1 on the Cortland side
Title:  BH 1 on the Cortland side
Description:  Getting a train on the Syracuse Branch during this era was something of a challenge. Conrail retained the line as far as Jamesvillem south of Syacuse, to serve a stone quarry, and was not willing to sell it to NYSW. As a result, the Suskie had only local business on it, which was served roughly twice a week. At the time, the Utica Branch was the more viable line, with almost daily service. So it was a catch to find a train running here. I got lucky this day, getting C 430 3000 rolling into Cortland.

How do you water a steam engine.
Title:  How do you water a steam engine.
Description:  In the 1990s, with a fire hose. Since steam service facilities are entirely a memory on anything other than a tourist line, one has to improvise to get water in the tank. Mostly this is done with a fire hose, which is equal to the task, and usually available by prior arrangement. Here the ground crew of 142 sets up to fill the tender.

Waiting on time
Title:  Waiting on time
Description:  The NYSW ran excursions for the annual Mapathon Maple Festival, starting with a run down from Cortland. Mikado 142 was the star of the train for several years. In 1993, it was brutally cold and snowy-there had been a!20 plus inch snowfall a week earlier-even for the festival, which was notorious for its awful weather. While it made for a challenging chase, steam in the snow made for a great show.
