Aurora Elgin & Fox River Electric Company 5 at South Elgin, Illinois on July 17, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Number 5 was built by GE in June 1946 (c/n 28467) and was used to switch coal between the IC connection in Coleman and the state hospital in South Elgin, the only remaining customer on the railroad after passenger service was discontinued in 1935. After the coal service was discontinued in 1973, this locomotive was sold to Chicago Gravel Company as 511, but returned to home rails on the Fox River Trolley Museum in 2001. |

Chicago, Aurora & Elgin interurban #316 was built by the Jewett Car Company in 1913. It served the CAE connecting communities from Chicago to Elgin but service ended on July 3, 1957. After service cessation, a group of railfans formed the Railway Equipment Leasing and Investment Company (RELIC), which grew into the Fox River Trolley Museum, to save key equipment including cars 316 and 317. |

For many years, Car 316 operated again on our museum line, delighting visitors with its graceful “coffee and cream” paint scheme and timeless craftsmanship. But in 2023 after decades of operation and exposure to the elements, it was time for a full restoration. That’s when our Restoration Dream Team (RDT), a passionate group of volunteers, stepped in. The RDT spent countless hours rebuilding and restoring every part of Car 316: the wooden structure, roof, wiring, controls, and even the original stained-glass windows. Each piece was repaired or recreated by hand to match the car’s 1913 specifications. We have not been back to see the final restoration - it's on our bucket list!! |
