CBQ 4-4-0 #476 - Chicago, Burlington & Quincy
Title:  CBQ 4-4-0 #476 - Chicago, Burlington & Quincy
Description:  Pittsburgh Locomotive Works built this loco in July of 1898 (pre-ALCo) originally as CBQ 4-4-0 #653 (serial #1832) for the Hannibal & St Joseph line. In 1898, it was relabeled Kansas City, St Joseph & Chicago Burlington. Then in 1904 it was relabeled CBQ 476 and later in 1916 to CBQ 197. The loco was finally retired in December of 1922. The builder information and dates from the Pittsburgh Locomotive Works files don't match the info on the back of the photo. No photographer was listed unfortunately.

CB&Q 4-8-4 Class O-5-A 5625
Title:  CB&Q 4-8-4 Class O-5-A 5625
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad 4-8-4 Class O-5-A 5625 at Eola, Illinois on December 14, 1952, photographer unknown, print by Tom Klinger, Chuck Zeiler collection. Number 5625 was assembled by the CB&Q at West Burlington, Iowa, completed in October 1938, sold for scrap in March 1954. In 1942 this locomotive was fitted with the Franklin steam distribution system employing poppet valves. Note the lack of eccentric rod. One of the primary objectives of the system was to employ relatively small diameter poppet valves, both for intake and exhaust, in this permutation five valves of both types (in the online patent design search, it was two supply poppets and three exhaust poppets) grouped in a manner to maintain the cylinder port clearance volume at a minimum. In poppet valve locomotive engines, especially of relatively large size, the cylinder port walls, because of their rather extended area, have been subject to warping, as a result of thermal changes. Any such warpage is likely to be reflected in distortion of the valve seats and the detrimental effect of such distortion is more serious with large diameter poppet valves than with small diameter valves. The employment of multiple small diameter valves is therefore of advantage in overcoming difficulties due to valve seat distortion. Although poppet valves operated well enough when they were carefully maintained, they could not stand up under the abundance of power that was packed into the Class O-5 Northerns. After a trial life of a few years, number 5625 was retired in 1954 and eventually scrapped, rather than invest money converting it back to original status.

A similar set of controls were on the other side of the cab, so the Engineer would be on the proper side of the locomotive no matter which direction it was moving. Looking through the window, you can see a vertical pipe, which was the exhaust pipe for the Vapor Standby Heater, installed on the running board in front of the cab on the long hood side. The purpose of the heater was to heat and circulate the cooling water through the engine block when it was shut down in cold weather to prevent freezing.

CB&Q F3 121A
Title:  CB&Q F3 121A
Description:  CB&Q F3 121A east of Eola, Illinois on Sunday October 11, 1964, photo by Chuck Zeiler. This locomotive was built during November 1947 (c/n 4465) on EMD Order E790A and was sold for scrap in May 1965 to Precision Engineering. This image is a result of my having missed the eastbound Dinky (commuter train) in Aurora, and the next Dinky was two hours later. Heck, I could walk home (to Naperville, 10 miles east) in two hours, and that's what I did. I shot photos along the way, and this location is about a half mile east of the EJ&E overpass in Eola. As it turned out, the next Dinky beat me to Naperville, but not by much.

My best guess says this is 167A (if I'm correct, then c/n 9696 on EMD Order 3058A) , based on equipment diagrams indicating that the B-unit's front coupled to the A. I determined the front of the B-unit based on the location of the batteries and fuel tank. Although the suffix letters were not displayed in the numberboards or sides numerals under the cab side window, the letters were assigned to each unit for maintenance purposes, and were painted on the side in small one inch letters below the word BURLINGTON. Later, when the units were broken up, and the drawbars between the units were replaced with couplers, the suffix letters were painted on the sides and between the headlights, and were displayed in the numberboards.

CB&Q 2726
Title:  CB&Q 2726
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad 2726 at Eola, Illinois on October 11, 1964, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Number 2726 was built in July 1928 by Pullman as CB&Q class PMC ( Passenger Motor Car ) number 847, powered by EMC with a Winton 275 horsepower gasoline engine ( c/n 283 ). It was renumbered in April 1930 to 9847. During December 1942 it was de-motored and converted to a passenger-mail-baggage car, renumbered to 2726 and assigned to branch line service. It is seen here at the Q's Reclamation Plant, soon to be scrapped.

This photo was originally marked as 2725, and information about 2725 was obtained from Bernard Corbin's book, "Burlington In Transition", however, Rupert Gamlen called my attention to the error as follows:

There is a photo of an ex-motor car labelled 2725, but I think this is 2726. Number 2725 was ex-574, 839 and 9839 built by Saint Louis, while 2726 was ex-847 and 9847 built by Pullman. One of the distinguishing features are the roof vents. The Saint Louis cars have them on the centreline while the Pullmans have box-like ones each side of the centreline. Also, according to Bill Glick's Passenger Car Roster book, 2725 was scrapped in 1958, six years before the photo.

CB&Q E7 9920A
Title:  CB&Q E7 9920A
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E7 9920A at the Eola Reclamation Plant on October 11, 1964, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This is the cab and first prime mover roof section of CB&Q E7 9920A (built in November 1945, c/n 2946), the lead locomotive of CB&Q Train Number 3, which struck a standing detouring Rock Island train at Mongomery, Illinois on September 27, 1964. The following is part of the ICC accident report:

The Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad (CRI&P) is connected to the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad (CB&Q) at Ottawa, Ill., which is on the Streator Branch 41 miles west of Montgomery. A few days before the accident, CRI&P trains started detouring over the CB&Q tracks between Ottawa and Chicago because of a defective CRI&P bridge over the Des Plaines River at Joliet, Ill. Some time before 8:45 p.m. on the day of the accident, CRI&P passenger trains No.4 and No. 10 were combined at Ottawa to detour eastward over the CB&Q to Chicago, via Montgomery interlocking. This combined train, consisting of six CRI&P diesel-electric units and 19 cars, operated on the CB&Q as Extra RI 656 East. It left Ottawa at 8:45 p.m. with a CRI&P engine crew, a CB&Q engineer-pilot, and a CB&Q road foreman of engines in the control compartment at the front of the locomotive. A CB&Q conductor-pilot and a CRI&P train crew were at various locations in the cars.

Approximately 2 hours after leaving Ottawa, Extra RI 656 East arrived at Montgomery interlocking, where it stopped on the Streator Branch main track with the front end 675 feet west of switch 14 and 195 feet west of signal 24-23, which indicated Stop. About the same time, the men on the locomotive saw a detouring westbound CRI&P passenger train, Extra RI 634 West, stopped on track No. 1 east of the interlocking station. A few minutes later, they saw the headlight of No.3, a west-bound CB&Q passenger train, approaching on track No.2 and surmised that their train would be routed eastward on track No.2 after No. 3 passed. While Extra RI 656 East was waiting for No.3 to pass, a warning device sounded in the control compartment of the first diesel-electric unit and the CRI&P fireman went into the engine room of this unit to determine why the warning device had sounded. Immediately after the fireman left the control compartment, the CB&Q road foreman of engines noticed No.3 had been diverted to the Streator Branch main track at switch 14 and was closely approaching at high speed. He promptly called a warning to the CRI&P and CB&Q engineers and ran to a side door of the control compartment, where he started to jump from the locomotive. Before he could jump, however, No.3 struck the front end of Extra RI 656 East, killing the CRI&P engineer and the CB&Q engineer-pilot. The CB&Q road foreman of engines and the CRI&P fireman were injured.

Number 3, a westbound first-class passenger train, consisting of 3 diesel-electric units and 15 cars, left Aurora at 10:45 p.m., 3 minutes late, and proceeded westward on track No.2. A few minutes later, it approached Montgomery interlocking at 63 miles per hour, as indicated by the speed recording tape. The engineer and fireman were in the control compartment at the front of the locomotive, and the other crew members were at various locations in the cars. Signal 5-3 indicated Proceed as the train approached Montgomery interlocking, and this indicated to the enginemen that the route was lined for movement of No.3 through the interlocking on track No.2. The route, however was improperly lined for movement of No.3 from track No.2 to the Streator Branch main track, via switch 14. The engineer apparently first became aware of this when the train reached the area of the interlocking station at which time he initiated an emergency brake application. A few moments later, the train passed the interlocking station, entered the Streator Branch main track at switch 14 and, while moving at 52 miles per hour, struck the front end of Extra RI 656 East.

CB&Q E9 9987A
Title:  CB&Q E9 9987A
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E9 9987A at the Eola Illinois Reclamation Plant on October 11, 1964, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Number 9987A was built in December 1955 (c/n 20537), and was wrecked at Montgomery, Illinois on September 27, 1964. This unit was the third of three E-units (the rear of E7 9922B on the left was the second) leading Train Number 3, which was mis-directed into a standing, detouring Rock Island train and Number 3 struck the Rock Island train at about 52 mph. Four railroad employees were killed. After the wreck was cleaned up and service restored, the wreckage was moved to the Eola Reclamation Plant where it was held for a couple of weeks while the investigation took place. Number 9987A was repaired and returned to service, the other two CB&Q locomoives were scrapped.

CB&Q GM-4A 83084
Title:  CB&Q GM-4A 83084
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad gondola Class GM-4A 83084 at the Eola Reclamation Plant on October 11, 1964, photo by Chuck Zeiler. The CB&Q had 590 class GM-4A gondolas (#'s 82550-83139) built in 1957 at the Havelock, Nebraska shops. This one contains the cab of Rock Island's E8 656, the lead unit on the detouring combined Corn Belt Rocket and the Golden State (Train #'s 4 and 10), which was hit by CB&Q's Train #3, mistakenly routed into the standing Rock Island train at Mongomery, Illinois on September 27, 1964. Marty Bernard's recollection of the incident is (at of the time of this post) at this address: http://railfan44.blogspot.com/2014/01/major-passenger-train-wreck-montgomery.html

CRI&P E8 656
Title:  CRI&P E8 656
Description:  CRI&P E8 656 at Eola, Illinois on October 11, 1964, Kodachrome by Cjuck Zeiler. This is the remains of Rock Island's E8 number 656, struck at about 52 mph by CB&Q's Train Number 3 at Montgomery, Illinois on September 27, 1964. The Rock Island train (combined CRI&P Trains 4 and 10, with 656 leading) was detouring over the CB&Q as a result of a bridge problem on their tracks into Chicago, and was waiting for the CB&Q train to clear. A hand written note was attached to the indicator board in the tower at Montgomery advising the operator of an issue with the switch machine and indicator lights, but it was still possible to set up a clear indication of signals, which were (at the time) not interlocked to the switch machine itself. At the time, Montgomery Tower was mechanically-controled interlocking (via pipes) with separate levers for the signal displays. The remains of the accident were shoved into a track at CB&Q's Eola Reclamation Plant for a couple of weeks while the investigation took place.

Title:  CRI&P E8 656
Description:  Chicago Rock Island & Pacific Railroad E8 656 at Eola, Illinois on October 11, 1964, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This is the remains of Rock Island's E8 number 656, built in June 1940 as E6 627 (c/n 1063) on EMD Order E305A. It was returned to EMD for wreck/rebuild to E8 656 during December 1953 (EMD Order 8028A). It was the lead locomotive on a detouring Rock Island train which was holding at Montgomery, Illinois on September 27, 1964, when CB&Q Train #3 was mistakenly routed into the standing Rock Island train, causing this unit to leap up over the lead CB&Q E7 9920A on impact at approximately 52 mph. Description:  CRI&P E8 651, Eola, Illinois, October 11, 1964, photo by Chuck Zeiler. This locomotive was built in March 1952 (c/n 15198) on EMD Order 2047A. See this address for a full report on this accident: http://railfan44.blogspot.com/2014/01/major-passenger-train-wreck-montgomery.html . Briefly, this was the second of six Rock Island locomotives (656, 651, 633, 750, 638 and 636) in a combined train (#'s 4 and 10) that was re-routed over the CB&Q because of a faulty bridge in the Rock Island's track. It was holding at Montgomery, Illinois, waiting for CB&Q's Train #3 to clear the interlocking, but #3 was routed by mistake into the standing Rock Island train, hitting it at approximately 52 mph, destroying both lead locomotives and killing four people.
