Title:
BO 0-6-6-0 #2400 - Baltimore & Ohio
Description:
Baltimore & Ohio 0-6-6-0 #2400 is an historic locomotive for many reasons starting with it being the first Mallet built in the US. Nicknamed "Old Maude" after a comic-strip mule, it was built to be a pusher loco for long strings of coal cars up steep grades on the B&O system. As a promotional item for the B&O, it went on display at the 1904 St Louis World's Fair. Alco-Schenectady built this unique loco in May of 1904 as B&O 0-6-6-0 #2400 (serial #27478, class O) in May of 1904 jointly designed by the B&O's James E Muhlfield and Alco's Carl J. Mellin. The success of this loco led to additional 30 revised 0-8-8-0 locos being built. In 1916, it was renumbered BO #7000. After its impact on railroading, it was still scrapped at Cumberland, MD in January of 1938. Specs - 56" drivers, impressive 235 psi boilter pressure, 20x32" high pressure cylinders, 32x32" low pressure cylinders, engine wt of 334,500 lb and tractive force of 71,500 lb. No photographer was listed for this historic photo from 1904.

Since the loco numbers and work numbers were not assigned in order, the serial number is unknown for this loco. The 1400s were never converted to oil burning, although their boilers were superheated by the Frisco Shops in the 1920's. The class was "dismissed from service" between March 1950 and November 1951. SLSF 4-8-2 #4400 - St Louis-San Francisco (Frisco)
Description:
The Frisco West Springfield Shops had a true skill in rebuilding older 2-10-2's into 4-8-2's like this one, SLSF 4-8-2 #4400 (serial #48023, class 4400). The loco was put to work hauling both passenger and freight. Not sure when the loco was retired but it would have been in the 1950's like the rest of the rebuilt 4-8-2's as the diesels began taking over the Frisco duties. Specs - oil burner, 70" drivers, 210 psi boiler pressure, 29x32" cylinders, engine wt of 449,760 lb and tractive force of 68,626 lb. No photographer was listed for the photo which is now in my rr collection.
