Description:  This Alco-Scenectady 2-8-2 Mikado was originally built for the Spokane, Portland & Seattle but diverted to the Great Northern. It was one of the very last Mikados to serve but finally headed to the scrappers in August of 1955 after dieselization was nearly complete. Specs - serial #61038, O-3 class, 63" drivers, 200 psi boiler pressure, 27x32" cylindeers, engine weight of 320,900 lb, tractive effort of 62,949 lb. Unknown photographer

Title:  A massive Great Northern 2-8-8-0 steam engine stored at Superior WI in June 1958.
Description:  This was at the end of steam where steam engines were stored in case of need during the fall grain rush across the GN system. The GN had a large yard in Superior WI that remains a large switching yard on the BNSF. 4 BNSF SD9's that once locked couplers with steam engines still remain on the BNSF in 2012.
