Here is an example of a 3 cylinder Alco built steam locomotive that served the Alton & Southern Rwy. Rare in the US, the 3 cylinder configuration flourished better in Europe. The original b&w photo is a poor quality due to its age and deterioration. The date listed is approximate. A. B. Jefferis name appears on the back.

This 2nd photo of the unusual 3 cylinder Alco built ALS #9 switcher is a more recent reprint from a good quality negative. Only one remaining 3 cylinder Alton & Southern Rwy loco is left - stored in the Transportation Museum in Kirkwood, MO near St. Louis. No date or location was given for the photo.
