CSX 20
Title:  CSX 20
Description:  Chessie Safety Express 20 on the rear of the Tulip Train at Holland, Michigan on May 15, 1982, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Number 20 was a full length dome with dining area below. The car was built by Pullman-Standard in 1952 as Milwaukee Road 58, sometime after May 1, 1971 it became Amtrak 9382, retired by Amtrak in May 1977, sold to Railway Exposition (W.F. Sprague & T.B. McOwen) as dome-lounge 382. . After the CSE, the car was repainted into its original Milwaukee Road colors and in 1998 was sold to American Orient Express where it received Amtrak private car #800265. Stored in Denver, then moved to Western Junction, WA in 2001. Donated to Chehalis-Centralia Railroad & Museum after the AOE shut down in 2008, but by this time the vandals and elements had rendered the car practically unrepairable. Later stored at Indiana & Ohio in the Cincinnati area, the car was scrapped in November 2009.

SCL E6 501
Title:  SCL E6 501
Description:  SCL E6 501 at Denver Union Station, Denver, Colorado, July 13, 1975 at 5:00PM, photo by J. H. Nixon, Chuck Zeiler collection. Number 501 was built as an E3A for the ACL in November 1939 (c/n 959) on EMC Order E335, was wrecked before delivery to ACL, returned to EMC and rebuilt as an E6A. It was retired in 1972 and later owned by Glen Monhart, restored to ACL appearance, and kept in Wisconsin. After Mr. Monhart was tragically killed in an auto accident the estate sold it and it now resides at the North Carolina Transportation Museum. It's actually owned by the North Carolina Department of Transportation, and it is on "long term loan" to the museum, which is offically part of the Department of Cultural Resources.

Built as number 1107 in September 1964 (c/n 29346) on EMD Order 7734, powered by the 567D3A 16-cylinder turbocharged diesel, it appears it was later numbered to SCL 608, then SCL 1958, then L&N 7040, then L&N/SBD/CSXT 4545. A total of 35 SDP35's were built between July 1964 and September 1965, almost all (see Comment below, thanks Jonathan) equipped with a steam generator at the rear, resulting in a squared off hood end and the rear steps became vertical, more like a ladder than stairs. The SAL owned 20 of these, originally numbered 1100-1119.

Sorry about the poor quality of this photo, it was an afterthought. I was photographing locomotives behind me on Pielet Borthers setout track that were about to be scrapped, and as I was leaving, I turned around and shot this, finishing out the roll of film, not thinking too much about new locomotives. I figured I had plenty of time to shoot these two on a better day. Live and learn!

Description:  SBD MP15T 1235, Nashville, Tennessee, June 24, 1986, photo by Chuck Zeiler. Number 1235 was built in December 1985 (c/n 857074-13) and later became CSXT 1235. The MP15T is the turbo-charged version of the MP15AC. The SBD bought 42 MP15T's, and Dow Chemical bought one, for a total production run of 43 MP15T's.

Description:  Seaboard System SD40 1242 near Greensboro, Georgia on February 25, 1983, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Number 1242 is meeting GA Train #108 (the train I'm on), the last mixed train on a Class One in the US.

I'm in the cupola of the caboose of Georgia Railroad Train Number 108. I purchased a ticket to ride in the Budd coach seen in the right foreground. The rear end crew, upon noticing my interest in railroading, invited me back to the caboose, which I graciously accepted. There is a reverse image artifact on the right side of the frame, which I cannot explain except perhaps that it's some piece of glass in the cupola.
